FAQs:HDTV
How can I tell if HD service is available in my area?
Contact your local service operator to ask if HD service is available in your area.
What does it look like?
HDTV gives you movie-theatre quality in your own home. The HDTV picture is sharper and has better color resolution than traditional analog television, enabling you to notice fine details in the picture – such as fans in the background of a sporting event or the twirling of the football stitches as the ball is thrown. Many HDTV monitors also use the widescreen format you’re used to watching in theatres. The width by height ratio is 16:9 versus 4:3 for traditional analog television. This special format allows you to see more action on screen all at once during a sporting event or a movie – instead of viewing an image that had been trimmed on both sides of the screen to fit the narrower, square-shaped TV screen.
What shows can I watch in HD?
These days, all of the major broadcast networks and a growing number of cable networks offer HD programming. You can view favorite prime-time sitcoms, major sporting events, local news and movies…all with crystal-clear picture, vivid color and amazing sound.
Digital cable networks also dedicate a range of channels to HD programming. Sports, nature shows, history and current events all come to life as never before in high-definition. Plus, premium channels like HBO and Showtimeฎ deliver movies in HD for a true theatre-like experience at home.
Why should I buy HDTV?
HDTV gives you a movie theatre experience in your home, with a wider, clearer picture.Your television shows come to life with sharper resolution and full, clear audio. Buying an HDTV also means you are investing in tomorrow’s television standard. If you are already planning to purchase a TV, consider that broadcasters are in the process of switching to all-digital broadcasts. When the transition is complete, you will need either a digital TV or a digital set-top for your analog television
