Qualcomm Mirasol: Color eBook reader

Mirasol Qualcomm filed an eBook reader with a 5.7-inch color screen that can play video while preserving battery life.

The display uses the same elements that allow the iridescent wings of a butterfly to shine, thin membranes that react to electrical charges placed on a reflective surface. The reflected light passes through these membranes and is refracted by different wavelengths to create the colors. Because the membranes are bistable, after taking the required color, do not require power to maintain it.

Qualcomm is working with several OEMs to the realization of various devices with this technology and plans to market an eBook reader by the end of 2010.
